Using Student Science Notebooks

Indiana Caravan 2011: How is Inquiry Science Like Baking Cookies?

Thursday, January 20th, 2011

Have you ever made cookies with kids?

Heard the delighted, ‘oh gross’ when they crack the eggs?

Seen the compulsion they all have to touch the flour?

Noticed way they repeat “are they done yet? are they done yet” after the cookies are popped into the oven?

That process – the mixing, measuring and sweat equity –  is inquiry science – that hands dirty, sleeves rolled up, complete involvement IS inquiry science.

And we are the best inquiry science program available in Indiana.

Belinda Basca, Director of Customer Curriculum Support

Along with being a science educator, our Director of Curriculum Customer Support, Belinda Basca is a serious baker. Good enough, actually, that she considered opening her own bakery. We grabbed before she could, but she agreed to share some recipes with you this week…

Lemon Bars

___

Ingredients

  • 2 cups flour
  • ½ cup powdered sugar
  • 1 cup butter, room temperature

Mix above and press into and up the sides of a 13 x 9 in pan. Bake 20 minutes at 350 degrees.

Icing Ingredients

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • ~10-12 tablespoons fresh lemon juice (this is the doubled amount I recommend)
  • 4 tablespoons flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt

Mix above and pour over the baked crust. Bake 20-25 minutes or until just golden on top.

Once cooled, sprinkle lightly with powdered sugar.
